      Biodiesel Production

Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from renewable resources.  Biodoesel contains no petroleum but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend.  It can be used in diesel engines with little or no modification.  Biodiesel is simple and safe to use, biodegradable, non-toxic, and essentially free from sulphur or aromatics.

Biodiesel is produced by reacting 100 parts by weight of a suitable oil or fat with 10 parts by weight of an alcohol (usually methanol) in the presence of a catalyst such as sodium or potassium hydroxide that has been pre mixed with the methanol.

The transesterification process produces 10 parts by weight of glycerine and 100 parts by weight of methyl ester (biodiesel).  The products of the transesterification process are neutralised with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid, the methanol recovered and the glycerine purified.

CRP has supplied PTFE lined ball valves, spring check valves, and PTFE lined piping to plants producing biodiesel in the UK and in SE Asia.  The products are used on the neutralisation stage which uses either hydrochloric or sulphuric acid to neutralise the sodium or potassium hydroxide used in the transesterifcation process.

As the process includes both acids and flammable organic components the linings for the piping and fittings are made from static dissipating materials.  The very short flow path through the ball valves means that provided a well proven earthing device is fitted, a standard lining can be utilised.  If process conditions demand flow velocities above the normal range for PTFE lined systems static dissipating linings can also be supplied for the ball and check valves.
